People with esophageal tumors often have a poor nutritional status. Attempts to correct weight loss may help reduce the complications of surgery, radiotherapy , chemotherapy and combined treatments.
• A nasogastric feeding tube (if there is no obstruction) or a gastrojejunostomy may be used for enteral nutrition.
• Parenteral hyperalimentation may be necessary for support during therapy.
• Esophageal dilation with or without laser therapy to maintain an open esophagus may help maintain nutrition.
